- Amongst many irrelevant letters in this file there is a report on ' Response of beech seedlings and saplings to release of overhead canopy competition in an A5 booklet 'Beech Research News'. This appears to be a published document. The report is concerned with a trial that was established in 1965 to assess response in height and diameter growth of beech sedlings and saplings to the release of overhead canopy competition. This trial was designed to test the effectiveness of treatment that was at the time applied by the Reefton Ranger School which was releasing seedlings and saplings from canopy competition by felling or ringbarking cull beech trees and non-merchantable tree species. All tagged stems were remeasured in 1968, 1971 and 1975 for diameter and height.
