- Describes 6 'bush nursery' sites where attempts were made to secure natural regeneration of podocarps from sowing seed on prepared ground in clearings, or from seed dispersed from marginal trees, or spreading branches with attached seed. The original objective was to obtain abundant natural seedlings suitable for transplanting and raising in nursery beds. The bush nurseries were established during a heavy rimu see fall with seed easily collected for sowing in nursery beds. The objective of the trial was then changed to an ecological study to determine natural regeneration abundance and growth on skid sites. Some site preparation was tried by ripping ground or adding loose pumice.

- General Note
- A bush nursery established by Fort Rd, Whirinaki in 1961, by tractor clearing of a gap surrounded by seed trees, produced some 20,000 rimu seedlings on sandy pumice invaded by wineberry and manuka, which were successfully transplanted to nursery beds when 10-20 cm tall.
