- Location plans, aerial photo. Excellent concise account of history and values of 3 experimental blocks totalling 645 ha of previous State Forest on crest of Mamaku Plateau, currently owned (1999-) by NZ Forest Research Institute, which attempted public sale of the blocks about 2004 after deciding it had no further interest in conducting indigenous forest research. The central and northern blocks were bought with assistance of the Nature Heritage Fund and now form part of the Patetere Scenic Reserve managed by DOC. Podocarps planted from 1959 in reverted cutover forest with a partial canopy of tawa/kamahi are now fully established, some with emergent crowns (by SH5 in north block). High demonstration and educational value. Locally prolific natural regeneration of podocarps and tawa.

- Only brief inspections have been made of planting trials over the past 10 years. Extensive plot data should be located (refer G Pardy, G Steward). Sample area (especially in north block) should be re-measured at age 50 years.
