Register sheet for field experiment dated 1977.Folder contains correspondence and notes on background of knowledge and experience on raising and planting out podocarps from 1963 (D S Preest). A710/1 refers to 1000 cluster planted kahikatea (groups of 3-5 seedlings) established in selectively-logged gaps on freshly disturbed soil by Select Rd in 1977 (30% logging). Very successful trial with 95% survival after 7 years. Best-grown trees 5-8m tall when visited in May 2005 (AE Beveridge, MC Smale). A710/2 was established in adjacent 60% selective-logged trial in 1978. General correspondence and liaison with FRI led to an ambitious planting programme in Pureora Forest, a 'Ministerial' on planting of indigenous species dated 9.8.77 and a 17p report "Indigenous re-establishment" (Earle Robinson, 5.12.78). Report on a workshop attended by members of FRI and Conservancy in December 1978, a culmination of earlier views and planning. There is a 6p commentary on Pureora work (Beveridge, 16.3.79). A section deals with Plot A710/2 - cluster planting of podocarps in area of 60% selective logging in the Pureora North Block. Folder has data for remeasurements to 1984. Last entry in folder is a 4p report (Pardy 11.1.85) supporting cluster planting of podocarps (3-5 close-planted seedlings on selected microsite). Additional comments by Beveridge (27.6.05) attached as handwritten notes to original datasheet for FRI 13.

- Purpose of A710 series was to 'Investigate the artificual establishment of indigenous (tree) species'. Good progress reports were written by Conservancy staff to 1984, 7 years after planting, when no further releasing was required. All central North Island trials established by FRI between 1975-79 were released and assessed annually for the first 3-7 years after planting. Plots inspected in 710/1 in 1999 and 2004 indicate that number tags are in good order, groups were surveyed at establishment.
