- A folder marked SPA 745 has loose items enclosed, including an incomplete register sheet, an 8p workplan outline by J Halkett (12.8.77), a weight/volume table for kauri poles, correspondence with Auckland Conservancy, a list of helicopter logging references. The trial involved production thinning of second crop kauri poles and was apparently the first time that helicopters were used for log extraction in NZ. A type map indicates that the area under investigation was 114 ha. Attached are 3 large envelopes with numerical data and a folder with Field Survey Tally Sheets. Note by T Cooper (25.1.84) requested file closure on successful extraction of kauri. Inventory data retained.

- General Note
- Some second growth kauri pole stands in Russell Forest were considered to be overstocked, so that a production thinning could be beneficial to the residual stand where conventional logging could not be done on several grounds, including environmental protection. Russell Forest has been managed by DOC since 1987, but methods could be applied in advanced second-growth kauri stands in private ownership. Refer to Ian Barton.
