- Kauri appears to be better able than kahikatea to withstand the extremes of atmospheric or soil drought on ridgetops. Glasshouse studies showed that kauri seedlings grew best at intermediate and high water levels and survived low water levels while kahikatea grew best only in wet soils and 50% mortality occurred in dry soils. Whole plant transpirational water loss was greater in kahikatea than in kauri seedlings.Maximum photosynthesis in seedling and juvenile kauri and kahikatea and in mature grafted kauri foliage was confined to early morning, but for kauri also occurred in late afternoon. In both species maximum photosynthesis took place prior to 10 am. Rates then reduced markedly in kauri, rising again in the late afternoon. With kahikatea rates reduced gradually through the day although there was a slight increase in late afternoon.
