Growth and survival of nursery-raised and wilding kauri established in indigenous cutover (only larger trees removed) and under manuka and kanuka. Established 1952 on clay soils. Remeasured 1963, 1971, 1982 and results summarised in internal report by T J Cooper, 1983 "Omahuta Forest kauri planting trial, SPA67, 30 years after establishment". Cmpt-8: cutover forest, natural regeneration of kauri prolific and planted seedlings lost identity; in 1963 35% survival and mean height 1.14m; plot closed 1971. Cmpt-4 in manuka/kanuka, 53% survival in 1982, mean height 3.8m (range 0.9 - 8m); mean annual height increment 12cm.Good summary for A67 given in unnumbered project record by Pardy and Herbert 1992. This plot was placed in category A (useful) with recommendation to remeasure 40 year old trees in Cpt 4 as a growth and survival plot at 5-year intervals; last measurements made in 1982

Future Work
Could extend Lloyd's report by including planting in other logged and regenerating kauri stands, and recommence inspections

General Note
Development of planted and natural kauri on old kauri sites, logged or burnt, could be assessed by inspection of NZFS plots with sample measurements. Trees now 53 years old. 800 kauri planted at 3m intervals on lines 6m apart. In Cmpt 4, 57 ha of fire-induced scrub planted with kauri in early 1950s. Conclusion: no need to plant cutover on this site where natural regeneration is prolific - slow early growth of both planted and natural seedlings on site of former kauri forest with patches of waterlogged soil.
