- Plot register sheets and location plans (roads are marked on Room 123 copy). Scanty information. Kauri were planted in natural manuka gaps in 1979 to determine whether kauri can be successfully established in this region. No regular pattern in 2 discrete areas near Lake Rotomahana. No subsequent information except that G Oliver intended to visit in 1980.

- Worth visiting, appraisal might give interesting information on kauri growth. Compare with growth of kauri in Rotorua suburban plantings.
- General Note
- Bob Regnault, of Rotorua Map and Track Shop, told AE Beveridge in July 2005 that kauri are visible near boat landing, Lake Rotomahana. Later advice from G Oliver on 13.8.05: he visited on 118.8.80 and considered there was 100% survival of kauri, but that tips of some seedlings had been browsed, possibly by wallabies. Shoots had flushed indicating late growth after 1979 planting. This record is worthwhile as future visitors might think that irregular pattern of planting and survival of kauri was an indication of natural regeneration of saplings. There may be other kauri plantings in Whaka Forest. Hundreds of kauri from the FRI nursery were planted in Rotorua gardens from the 1950s and are becoming features of the suburban landscape. Measured at up to 20m tall and 20-30cm dbh.
