- Records mainly from 1980 and 1984. Contains a register sheet and location plan for field experiment, a 3p workplan (7.8.1980) by J Innes on podocarp establishment and assessment of browsing damage to clusters and assessment of growth inside and outside small enclosures. A further workplan on analysis of data is dated 4.7.1984. A 4p note on a field visit to this plot and podocarp cluster plantings in partially-logged dense podocarp forest at the margin of the Mangawiri Basin is dated July 1984. Large kahikatea seedlings were showing recovery from deer nipping off leaders at about 120cm. Kopuatoto trial is in an area of podocarp/tawa forest partially logged in the late 1970s. Road access has been cut by washouts. Lack of uniformity in microsites in the Mangawiri Basin would make growth and browsing assessment difficult.

- Future Work
- Problematical, but visit worthwhile to see whether or not clearings have forest regeneration and growth of planted podocarps. Both natural and planted podocarps and regrowth should be assessed with the objective of determining how the forest has reacted to devastating canopy opening, comparable with a cataclysmic event.

- General Note
- The Mangawiri cluster plantings of about 1976, using both wildings and nursery-raised rimu and kahikatea were briefly inspected in 2004 (by A E Beveridge). The most vigorous seedlings were up to 8m tall but survival had been affected by windfalls and debris from an opening canopy and collapsing dead pioneer wineberry and subsequent invasion by climbing species. From about 1975 until end of salvage logging in 1984, about 21 000 ha of podocarp/tawa forest were partially logged and widespread enrichment planting was attempted.
