Regeneration sampling was done in 1959 by A E Beveridge and NZFS trainees, using continuous 25 m2 quadrants marked at intervals of 200m through Leptospermum/kamahi scrub resulting from old fires. Location can be seen on the type map of the National Forest Survey and on later plans and aerial photos previously held at the FRI. Folders marked 'Regeneration Survey 1959' were retained by A E Beveridge until handed to M C Smale in 2006. Mark Smale has continued to take an active interest in forest pattern and dynamics in Pureora Forest Park. The sampled area is adjacent to the Maori-owned Pouakani Block logged for podocarps in 1956 but retaining patches of large pole rimu resulting from pre-European fires. Since sampling tall kanuka have died, the kamahi canopy has continued to die back or open and possums have invaded since sampling time.

General Note
Podocarp regeneration developed before browsing mammals were introduced and high bird populations were likely for dispersal of seed from adjacent high forest. Maori history and archaeological survey would be interesting. Origin of straight trenches in kamahi stands not known, filled with loose humus and litter, apparently reworked by pigs. Bird hunters artefacts nearby and totara posts.
