- Progress report 6pp on 'Releasing rimu planted in selectively logged podocarp/tawa forest', dated 14.5.84 by David Bergin. Rimu seedlings planted in wineberry regrowth 4 years after logging. Trial over 5ha objective to find a minimum releasing prescription for planted rimu seedlings in order to establish 2m high saplings able to survive competition. Seedlings from Cambridge Nursery, 4yr old, 85cm tall, tight cluster of 3 seedlings per group in gaps. Released by hand or chemicals. Control plots. No significant difference in survival after 12 months (95% - 100% survival). Discussion of various chemical treatments and resulting growth effects.

- Slow early growth of rimu affected by soft planting stock. Usually first-year growth averages 10cm (cf 2cm here). On this site regrowth up to same height as planted rimu in 12 months. Gaps cut initially for planted cluster. Chemical release gives no advantage initially.
