- Location plan. Much work has been put into these 2 experimental areas, involving thinning or releasing of kauri/podocarp second-growth stands. Many growth data are included, but in a memo dated 8.9.78 in FRI file 28/5/1 (copy in A315/1) mensurational aspects are questioned. Mark Smale and John Herbert have looked through the file and made pencilled notes, doubting the value of the work. In particular, John Herbert considers that A315 is not useful for assessing response of kauri to thinning as only about 15% of trees were kauri and there is no raw data. No trees were tagged. Could there be value in assessing actual growth rates of kauri and podocarps? Similar doubts apply to report (1986) of D McKenzie on A315/2.
