- Seed was collected from the top and bottom of the crowns of two trees. There were no significant differences in growth between the two crown positions. However, the heavier seed from one tree produced seedlings which had significantly faster growth than that from the other tree. These differences disappeared as the seedlings grew. It was concluded that seed weight and early growth rates would not give a guide to inherent vigour. Growth rates of red and green leafed seedlings was also compared. Red leaved seedlings did not grow more slowly than green.
