- Location map. Data for growth and survival 1958-1964 with inspection notes and sample measurements 1998-2005. Descriptions of site, site preparation, history of plot and adjacent forest, planting stock, planting pattern, weed competition, forming of closed canopy with suppression of grass, dense blackberry. Detailed accounts of injuries to totara shoots by unseasonal frost, insects, possibly rabbits or hares initially (no possums), trampling by wild horses in first year until plantation fenced. Wildings transplanted to veneer containers with different potting mixes for 6 weeks before planting on tractor-cleared site. Eucalypts interplanted in second year (1959). Lines blanked until 1960. Persistance and later growth acceleration demonstrate ecological characteristics of totara. Eucalypts felled, a few logs extracted, 2004. Effective early nurse for totara on frost prone site. About 100 totara trees left undamaged, others felled and left.

- Totara is a suitable species for forest restoration planting adjacent to ecological areas in the central North Island. This trial was established on a harsh open site. Was first planting of totara on an open upland site in central North Island. Very slow height growth in early years, but produced a healthy stand with closed canopy at 40 years with trees up to 12m tall and 25cm stem diameter. Near upper altitude limit of Podocarpus totara. This TTT91 (=MS FRI 15, written 31.3.05) is a more detailed version of TTT1, which has no MS FRI number and even has a different heading.Cross reference to no. TTT002001 -probably same trial
