- Plot folder titled 1/59, field experiment has never been registered. Folder contains a handwritten summary, comments on seasonal growth and insect damage and field measurements for 1959-64. Podocarps were line planted beneath a near intact canopy of shrub hardwoods that was by-passed in logging of podocarp/hardwood forest. Natural podocarp seedlings were tagged and growth and survival of all seedlings measured until 1999, 40 years after plot established. Plot has been inspected up to 2006 and results given as evidence for the longevity and degree of shade tolerance for the podocarps. Miro (natural seedlings) is most shade tolerant with rimu, kahikatea, and totara showing decreasing tolerance. All species had 90% survival after 5 years. Totara grew to 2-3m in height, became moribund at 40 years and had all died after 47 years, when kahikatea was also moribund. Rimu had best survival at 47 years with several emerging from small natural gaps in shrub canopy.

- General Note
- Miro and planted rimu seedlings can survive for 50 years or more and grow slowly to emerge through canopy gaps. Planting stock was of wilding origin, transplanted to to tubes and raised in Pureora Nursery. Two natural totara with large, bushy crowns in full light on plot margin have grown from 20 cm stem diameter to 50 cm diameter after 47 years.
